During his appearance on the October 5 episode of NBC’s TODAY Show, John Cena revealed the John Cena Classic will begin this December, one year after his retirement match took place, where he lost to Gunther by submission.
“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So we’re going to do an event based off of all the memory, all of the nostalgia, and the IP and the core values of the character, which is me – hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds. And giving the vote to the people, our audience is going to decide our champion on that night. So it’s a really unique live event. I don’t even know if it’s going to work, but I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space. And I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”
Cena is under contract with WWE as a company ambassador. The concept of the John Cena Classic is that NXT, Raw and SmackDown Superstars will all compete against each other with fans voting on who they want as the inaugural John Cena Classic Champion. Superstars are eligible for votes regardless of wins or losses.
Cena began the interview by talking about his new movie, “Matchbox”, which is streaming exclusively on Apple TV. He said the stunts challenged him to face his fear of heights.
