A recent column from Conrad Thompson on Uncrowned, indicated there were “whispers” that Vince Russo was in talks over the summer with WWE to possibly return to the creative team. Thompson also noted those talks, however, reportedly “died on the vine.”
Fightful Select now reports that several people at WWE Headquarters heard Nick Khan had conversations with Vince Russo. However, it was unknown how serious those talks became. Fightful also said the nature and seriousness of conversations between Khan and Russo are not clear. Russo was either at WWE HQ at one point or had been under consideration for a visit.
The report from Fightful Select also notes the talk of Russo’s was not heard by the rest of WWE staff and that none of the agents, producers, writers or other road staff heard about talks between Khan and Russo, with it being further said that some influential names laughed it off.
At the time of this writing, neither Russo nor any WWE representative has publicly commented on situation.
Russo was WWE’s head writer beginning in 1997, contributing to the attitude era that helped the company eventually win against WCW during the Monday Night Wars. Russo left WWE in late 1999 to become the head writer for WCW. He then left WCW in October 2000. In July 2002, Russo would join the the newly launched NWA-TNA as part of the creative team. He was replaced as head of creative in October 2011 and came back later in a consulting role and then left permanently in July 2014.
Russo most recently was part of the creative team for Juggalo Championship Wrestling. He left just after a year with the promotion, publicly stating tha at 65 years old, he isn’t the same guy he was 30 years ago and that life has changed and he has changed.
He currently hosts a podcast with Jonathan Coachman called The Coach and Bro Show.
