“The World Wrestling Federation: for over fifty years, the revolutionary force in sports entertainment.” The WWF video leads us into the show.
Video: WWF President Gorilla Monsoon appears. Monsoon says, “It is with great reluctance that I announce the indefinite suspension of The Ultimate Warrior. This suspension is a direct result of The Ultimate Warrior’s failure to appear as advertised last weekend in Indianapolis, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. This suspension will be immediately lifted, however, as soon as the Warrior posts an appearance bond to ensure WWF fans that he will appear where advertised. However, The Ultimate Warrior is here tonight, as promised, and will wrestle Owen Hart. We remain hopeful that The Ultimate Warrior will soon post an appropriate appearance bond and return to action here in the World Wrestling Federation. Despite the immense popularity of The Ultimate Warrior, no one wrestler is above answering to our loyal WWF fans.”
Video: The Raw video plays, which still features The Ultimate Warrior.
Owen Hart and Jim Cornette are in the ring. Hart’s left wrist is still in a cast.
The Ultimate Warrior charges down to the ring. Vince McMahon says this is hopefully not the final match of The Ultimate Warrior. Jerry “The King” Lawler says this is the last we’ll see of the Warrior.
Owen Hart w/ Jim Cornette vs. The Ultimate Warrior
Referee: Earl Hebner
The bell rings, and Owen Hart is outside the ring. Hart gets in the ring and charges. Warrior drops down and goes for a clothesline, but Hart ducks it. Warrior then uses Hart’s momentum to send him over the top rope.
Video: WWF Champion Shawn Michaels and WWF Intercontinental Champion Ahmed Johnson are backstage. Vince McMahon asks who their third man will be now that The Ultimate Warrior has been suspended. Who will team with them at In Your House: International Incident against Camp Cornette? Michaels says they won’t drag this secret out. They’ve secured their third man, and he will be here shortly. Johnson says their third man has to be able to hold their own. This isn’t the type of man you’d invite over for Sunday dinner or at all. You’ll find out who it is in a few minutes.
Throughout that whole thing, Hart was outside the ring delaying this match. Hart gets in the ring and hits the ropes for a clothesline, but Warrior ducks it. Warrior shoulder tackles Hart before hitting a pair of hip tosses. Warrior then clotheslines Hart over the top rope. Hart is stunned at ringside.
Jim Cornette talks strategy with Hart. Hart gets on the apron, and Warrior brings him into the ring the hard way. Warrior sends Hart into the ropes and hits a flapjack. Warrior slams him down by the hair, and Hart gets up in the corner. Warrior punches away at him and sends him hard into the opposite corner. Warrior punches Hart down twice before sending him to the opposite corner and hitting a powerslam. Warrior sends him sternum-first into the turnbuckles and connects with a sidewalk slam. Hart reverses a whip, drops down, and takes the Warrior down with a spinning heel kick. Warrior immediately pops up and gets fired up. Hart quickly clotheslines him, but Warrior pops up again. Hart hits another clothesline, but Warrior pops up again. Warrior suddenly looks wobbly, and Hart kicks and punches him into the corner. Hart sets up for a vertical suplex, but Warrior blocks it. Warrior connects with a vertical suplex and hits the ropes for a Big Splash, but Hart gets the knees up.
Hart grabs the Warrior’s legs and stomps him on the midsection. Hart celebrates before holding his wrist in pain. Hart stomps his midsection again and drops an elbow.
-Commercial Break-
Back from the break, Hart is mocking Warrior. Hart chokes him with his boot and blows snot on him. Hart stomps Warrior’s back and headbutts him before choking him on the middle rope. The referee admonishes Hart as Cornette jabs the handle of his tennis racket into Warrior’s throat. Hart avalanches Warrior against the middle rope. Cornette gets another cheap shot with his tennis racket.
Hart stomps away at Warrior, but he starts getting fired up. Hart quickly cuts him off with an enzuigiri. Cornette hands the Slammy Award to Hart, and he celebrates with it. Hart pulls Warrior to his feet and punches him. Hart heads to the top rope and hits a missile dropkick for a two-count. The kickout sends Hart out of the ring. Hart quickly gets back into the ring and grabs his legs for a Sharpshooter attempt. Warrior kicks Hart away and starts to get fired up.
The British Bulldog makes his way to the ringside area. Hart attacks Warrior from behind, but he starts to shake and dance around. Warrior hits the ropes and runs Hart over with a trio of clotheslines. Warrior signals for the end and hits a diving shoulder tackle. Bulldog gets in the ring and charges, but Warrior drives him into the corner and clotheslines him from behind. The referee calls for the bell.
Winner by Disqualification: The Ultimate Warrior
Vader runs down to the ring, but Warrior drops him with a right hand. Warrior punches Hart down. Vader quickly attacks Warrior and headbutts him. Bulldog crushes Warrior with a Running Powerslam. Vader and Bulldog pull Warrior to his feet and hold him up. WWF officials run down to try to help. Hart comes off the top rope with a flying cast to the head. Warrior drops to the canvas, unconscious. Cornette stomps Warrior. Vader scares the WWF officials off with a tennis racket. Bulldog and Hart hold Warrior’s arms and legs. Vader goes to the second rope and CRUSHES Warrior with a Vader Bomb. Bulldog and Hart stomp Warrior as we go to commercial.
Mike’s Thoughts: And that’s that for The Ultimate Warrior for this piece of the Monday Night War journey. He will show up again, but this time in WCW, in one of their more ill-fated feuds. They paid Warrior a lot of money so Hulk Hogan could get his WrestleMania VI loss back.
This show kicks off with the figurehead WWF President Gorilla Monsoon announcing The Ultimate Warrior’s suspension (though his reasoning for why Warrior was on tonight’s show was beyond lame since it totally nullified everything he was saying about the appearance bond, which was actually a totally legit demand the company had), and the company was teasing who his replacement at the pay per view would be as he’s wrestling Owen Hart. It was a bizarre visual. What happened with The Ultimate Warrior and the WWF?
Let’s take a trip to the History Corner.
History Corner: The End of the Warrior’s Final WWF Run
When the Ultimate Warrior returned at WrestleMania XII, the WWF thought they had recaptured lightning in a bottle. Warrior received one of the biggest reactions of the night, squashed Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and looked like the perfect nostalgia act to help stabilize a company entering uncertain times.
For a few weeks, it seemed like maybe this could work.
Three months later, it was over.
Unfortunately, by 1996, this wasn’t an isolated incident. The Ultimate Warrior had already developed a reputation for contentious contract negotiations and last-minute business disputes. In 1991, he famously sent Vince McMahon a letter demanding more money for his WrestleMania VII match against Randy Savage, a higher percentage of merchandise and live event revenue, and a bigger piece of the company’s business. Warrior believed he was one of the company’s biggest attractions and wanted to be compensated accordingly. Then, before SummerSlam 1991, he allegedly held McMahon up for more money before the main event. McMahon agreed to get him through the show, then suspended him immediately afterward.
Warrior returned in 1992, but that run didn’t last long either. With the federal government cracking down on steroids in wrestling, Warrior was gone from the company agai
