WWF Monday Night Raw Results
October 14, 1996 (Taped September 23)
Hershey, Pennsylvania (Hersheypark Arena)
Commentary: Kevin Kelly and Jim Ross
Results by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“The World Wrestling Federation: for over fifty years, the revolutionary force in sports entertainment.” The WWF video leads us into the show.

Video: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is vicious, vile, shows no remorse, and knows no mercy. Shawn Michaels has braved the challenge of every predator in the World Wrestling Federation, but lately the champion looks beatable. Have the battles finally taken their toll? “Stone Cold” smells blood. Austin says, “This isn’t the Good Book, son. This is Austin 3:16, and tonight, Shawn Michaels, I’m gonna whip your ass!”

Video: The Raw video plays.

“It’s time… it’s time… it’s Vader Time!”

Vader heads to the ring with Jim Cornette. Kevin Kelly and Jim Ross welcome us to the show. Jerry “The King” Lawler will be in action against Jake “The Snake” Roberts tonight. Ross will also have a special interview with Mr. Perfect, who returns to the ring against Hunter Hearst Helmsley live on Raw next week. Kelly says this next match is a tune-up match for Vader ahead of his match against Sycho Sid at In Your House: Mind Games.

Replay: Last week on Raw, Vader delivered a big splash to Sycho Sid. Sid quickly popped up and gave Vader a chokeslam.

Kevin Kelly announces that Vince McMahon is returning to host Monday Night Raw next week with Jerry “The King” Lawler. Ross asks if anyone talked to Kelly about this in person. Kelly says he got a phone call from Kevin Dunn, the executive producer.

Mike’s Thoughts: I can’t say that I’m upset about this announcement. As corny as Vince McMahon is on commentary, he is head and shoulders better than Kevin Kelly. This two month experiment is finally over. Kelly’s announcing is just too milquetoast. When it’s following McMahon’s normal growling through a broadcast and the “WHAT-A-MANEUVER” stuff, it was kind of jarring. This was the first of many attempts by McMahon to try to get out of the weeds and have a more global view of the product, but it was hard for him to really actually stop.

Vader w/ Jim Cornette vs. Phinneas I. Godwinn w/ Hillbilly Jim

Referee: Earl Hebner

Vader mauls Phinneas I. Godwinn as he gets in the ring. Vader hits him with a pair of short-arm clotheslines before taking him down. Vader backs Godwinn into the corner and clubs his chest several times. Vader then throws Godwinn out of the ring. Ross complains about Vince McMahon’s ego being out of control. Kevin Kelly says his wife was very concerned. Ross doesn’t care what Kevin Dunn or Vince McMahon says. He’ll be at the commentary table next week in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Kelly says he’s willing to be a company man. Ross says he was a company man the first two times he came through the organization. Vader follows Godwinn out of the ring and bounces him off the commentary table several times.

Vader puts Godwinn in the ring and whips him into the corner before hitting an avalanche. Vader hits Godwinn with some vicious punches to the head before taunting the crowd. Vader backs up and avalanches him again. Sycho Sid comes down to the ringside area and shouts at Vader. Vader is not happy. Godwinn clotheslines Vader down, but Vader quickly responds with a punch. Vader applies a side headlock, but Godwinn counters with a back suplex. Sid heads to the back. Godwinn punches Vader in the corner and clotheslines him over the top rope. Godwinn gets Vader into the ring and hits a scoop slam. Godwinn signals for a Slop Drop, but Vader holds the ropes to counter it.

Vader avalanches Godwinn down before positioning him in the corner. Vader climbs the ropes and connects with a Vader Bomb for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Vader

Mike’s Thoughts: God, this company is so formulaic. Nearly every squash match I’ve recapped, with a few exceptions, follows the same pattern: the dominant wrestler owns the first half, slips on a banana peel and eats a mini comeback from the job guy, and then the wrestler going over hits his big signatures to end it.

That’s just how the WWF does it, so Vader, who on this same taping defeated WWF Champion Shawn Michaels relatively cleanly in a Tag Team Match, has to take a little comeback from Phinneas I. Godwinn. My question, which I’ve wondered for the majority of Vader’s run with this company, is whether he really has to take so much punishment in these squash matches. Does P.I.G. really need to be slamming him and clotheslining him over the top rope? Or can P.I.G. (his initials because, you know, comedy) throw a few punches and rock Vader before Vader goes back to crushing him?

Wouldn’t Vader look like an even bigger monster if most of these matches had gone that way instead of him making guys like P.I.G. and Duke “The Dumpster” Droese look competitive? On top of whatever was happening politically backstage, these types of performances did just as much to damage poor Vader in this run. Somehow, he wins and still loses.

Jim Ross interviews Mr. Perfect ahead of his in-ring return

Jim Ross is in the ring and introduces Mr. Perfect, who is about to come back to the ring and perhaps the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time.

Mr. Perfect makes his way to the ring to a nice ovation. Ross says Mr. Perfect has made quite an impression on Hunter Hearst Helmsley, stealing his women right and left. Helmsley hasn’t liked it. Next week on Raw, he returns to the ring to go one-on-one with Mr. Helmsley. Perfect says before we talk about Helmsley and anything to do with him, Perfect wants to make something clear: there’s only one Mr. Perfect in the World Wrestling Federation, and you’re looking at him. Ross says Perfect looks like he is in great shape. Is he 50% perfect? 75%? Or is he past perfect? Perfect asks if Ross sees any flaws in him. Ross doesn’t see it. Perfect never backs down from a challenge. Next week, it’s going to happen. Mr. Perfect is going to be here, live, doing what he does best, which is getting the job done in the middle of the ring.

Mr. Perfect takes his jacket off. Ross asks if he’s worried about ring rust. Perfect says there’s only one Mr. Perfect. He always keeps himself in perfect shape, has no flaws or cavities. Perfect has been waiting a long time to get back into the squared circle. All these New Generation punks are walking around here with their cocky hairdos like they’re something big. Mr. Perfect says he’s the greatest Intercontinental Champion ever. He’s the greatest athlete the World Wrestling Federation has ever produced. Next week, he’ll prove it. Mr. Perfect jogs around the ring as the crowd gives him a round of applause.

Mike’s Thoughts: A decent promo by Mr. Perfect to reestablish himself as a wrestler and promote his match against Hunter Hearst Helmsley next week on Raw.
