“The World Wrestling Federation: for over fifty years, the revolutionary force in sports entertainment.” The WWF video leads us into the show.

Video: Last Monday on Raw, Vader pinned WWF Champion Shawn Michaels in a Tag Team Match involving Jim Cornette and José Lothario. Tonight, Vader is here, and he wants the title. Goldust and Marlena love playing mind games, but their opponent lost his mind long ago: Sycho Sid. We’ll hear from “The Real Double J” Jesse James, who is singing alongside Jim Johnston in a video clip. James says Jeff Jarrett can eat his heart out.

Video: The Raw video plays, and we head to Hersheypark Arena to see some fireworks.

Kevin Kelly and Jerry “The King” Lawler welcome us to the show. Jim Ross is supposed to be there, but they don’t know where he is.

WWF Intercontinental Champion “Wildman” Marc Mero heads to the ring alongside Sable. He’ll be facing Diesel, who is absolutely not Kevin Nash. Diesel heads to the ring accompanied by Jim Ross. Ross joins the commentary team and apologizes for being late. Diesel gets his regular pyro.

Mike’s Thoughts: We’re still doing this?

I’ve spoken at length about the issues surrounding the marathon television tapings where they would bang out four episodes of Raw at a time. You get progressively dying crowds, matches that have no business going long being stretched to fill time, and a product that cannot react quickly when something clearly is not working. This angle is the epitome of that problem.

When the ratings came in for the September 23 show, it was the second-lowest Raw rating of the Monday Night War so far at 2.04, with only the August 12 go-home show for SummerSlam doing worse at 1.98. That is a pathetic number for a live show where a new Intercontinental Champion was crowned. Instead of that being the focus, the company spent so much of the show pushing the supposed return of Razor Ramon and Diesel, an angle the audience clearly wasn’t buying. Once the reaction came in, this clearly should have been dropped immediately. The problem is that the next three weeks of Raw were already in the can, so the WWF couldn’t adjust on the fly. They just had to keep airing another three weeks’ worth of embarrassment. The ratings are only going to get worse.

Glenn Jacobs, who recently portrayed Dr. Isaac Yankem, DDS, is now stuck in another supremely lame gimmick as Fake Diesel. To be fair, he looked a lot better than Rick Bognar did as Fake Razor in his debut match last week, and Bognar’s punches looked even worse this week, but this is still a dead-on-arrival gimmick. That is two bad gimmicks in a row for a guy who clearly shows some promise. Maybe he should try a different line of work. Politics, perhaps? I’m just spitballing.

Video: We’re back in the cemetery. The Undertaker is inside a burial plot that he has dug for Mankind. The Undertaker says his work here is nearly at an end, as is Mankind’s existence on this earth. All that’s left to do is to fill this grave with his rotting, maggot-infested carcass. Mankind won’t have a nice day, and he sure won’t Rest… in… Peace.

The New Rockers make their way to the ring.

Locker Room Interview

Sycho Sid is preparing for his match against Goldust. Kevin Kelly asks if he has anything to say to Goldust. Sid says Goldust will dance with the devil. In the game they play, he is the master. Goldust will find out that he is the ruler. Sid laughs psychotically.

Video: Still to come, we’ll see footage of “The Real Double J” Jesse James singing “With My Baby Tonight.”

Video: You can purchase a denim shirt of Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, or Undertaker for $49.00, plus $7.00 shipping and handling. Just call 1-888-WWFShop.

WWF Raw is brought to you by PlayStation. The company is also sponsoring In Your House: Buried Alive.

Video: Earlier today, The Smoking Gunns talked about facing Owen Hart and The British Bulldogs at In Your House: Buried Alive. Bart Gunn says they’re going to get back what is rightfully theirs. Billy Gunn says they’ll get Sunny back, as well. Bart tells Billy to focus on the titles.

Tag Team Match
The New Rockers (Marty Jannetty and Leif Cassidy) vs. The Smoking Gunns (Bart Gunn and Billy Gunn)

Referee: Jack Doan

It’ll be Billy Gunn starting against Leif Cassidy. Billy is not happy that the crowd is chanting for Sunny.

Phone Call: Sunny calls in. She says if The Smoking Gunns win the titles back, she might consider taking them back. She thinks Billy is too hard to resist. Jim Ross tells her that Ahmed Johnson will be live on WWF Livewire with her, and Sunny is not happy. She wants extra security on Saturday for Livewire.

Nothing happened while Sunny was talking. Marty Jannetty tags in against Bart Gunn. Jannetty quickly rolls him up for a two-count. Bart kicks Jannetty and hits a scoop slam, but Jannetty pulls him down for an inside cradle for another two-count. Bart stomps away at Jannetty and sends him into the ropes, but Jannetty catches him with a backslide
